Letrozole is a non-steroidal medicine used to treat receptor-positive breast cancer specifically in postmenopausal women. It is recommended either after a surgery to prevent relapse or at advanced cancer stages where the growth entirely depends on estrogen. It works by blocking an enzyme called aromatase, which aids the body in estrogen production. This way letrozole slows down or stops the cancer's proliferation.
Most reported side effects include hot flushes, fatigue, joint or bone pain, vertigo, dizziness, sweating, weight gain, and nausea. Long-term estrogen suppression may lead to weak bones, fracture risk, or increased cholesterol levels. Any skin- or heart-related effects must be immediately reported to a medical professional.
